Thursday Tidbits

  • This past weekend was a blur.  It involved swimming, running, catching up with Bryn, working in the archive, getting temporarily stuck on the highway when my car broke down, paying $400 to get my car fixed, working in the archive, getting Tori cuddles, and catching up at dinner with Heidi.  Oh, and I ran a 5k.
  • Given all of the above and having a few nights of little sleep over the weekend, I was exhausted most of the 4th of July while also battling an egg sensitivity-like stomach ache for most of the day.  Note to self: Stay away from the mayonnaise that comes with Starbucks' sandwiches.  It's a good thing the stomach ache went away before dark because I got stuck working late on a motorcycle accident.
  • I decided to sleep-in as long as possible on the 4th to try to reset my weary head and iffy stomach.  It seemed to do the trick for the most part.  I woke up at 9:30.  While my morning was short and I headed off to work with no morning exercise in, I didn't really care.  Sooner I go to work, sooner I'm done with it.
  • I have created my training plan for the Disney World Half Marathon in January.  I'm making my training slightly extended so that it will allows for a few "off" or lazy weeks, which I know will happen. My official training starts August 1st.  Until then, I'm going to try my best to get my butt out of bed in the morning so I can have consistent running through July.  ** Actually, I may be changing my plan already.  Standby.
  • One of my biggest challenges lately has been eating healthy.  I haven't been organized enough to have the right combinations of things to cook what I want to cook.  I've been haphazardly plowing through whatever is left in the cupboards and freezer rather than eating fresh foods.  This needs to change over the next month if I'll have any hope of fueling correctly and avoiding injury during training.

  • I ran in the FireKracker 5k Wednesay morning.  I was glad I signed up because it got me out of bed and running.  I probably would have slept in because I was so tired from me weekend.  My headphones shorted out just as the race started so I ran the race with only one ear piece.  It threw off my mojo for the first mile.  That and all of the damn runner/walkers that were driving me bonkers.  See, I know I'm slow and start towards the back of the back.  All of the people that don't run but sign up take off running and pretty soon are sucking wind and start walking.  I jog past them.  And then they decided to run again and they run past me.  And ten feet past me they stop to walk.  And I jog past them.  And then they decide to run again... on and on and on.  I end up passing these people about a dozen times over the course of a mile.  It is by far my biggest pet peeve while running a race!!  Thankfully, I eventually passed them for good around Mile 2 when they were distracted by the water station.  I think my time for the race was around 35 minutes, maybe slightly under 36.  Average pace was probably 11:20/mile.  I think at the next race I'll start a little more towards the front of the pack.
  • In Brinkley news, we found out that his body doesn't like brown rice.  I read that this could be a possibility.  Sometimes a dog's digestive track is not able to break it down, which means the dog gets nothing of nutritional value from it.  So, Brink will only get white rice in his recipes from now on.  He has also finished his loading dose for Glyco-Flex III, which means he goes from two tablets a day to one!!  YAH!  There has been a noticeable improvement in his fluidity.  I don't see him favoring his rear leg nearly as much as he used to.  Even when we went our 6 mile hike in Estes and 4 mile hike up to the "A" he did great!  And when he jumps up into bed, he has a much higher jump and better clearance.  He seems generally happier.  Fewer snaps and cracks too!
