Weekend Recap

My weekend in reverse...

Lunch with this character.  And some shopping.  He's a smart ass just like his father.  Hilarious and annoying at the same time.  It's a good thing he's cute.

Dinner at Mom and Dad's after getting home from Denver on Sunday afternoon.  Mom made a Famous Dave's like spread that was delicious!!

Saturday night involved being surrounded by cops at my friend Bryn's house.  Her neighbors were involved in some domestic violence incident.  They made us turn out the lights until the situation was resolved.  We listened to the play by play on 5-0 radio.

This pic is actually from Saturday morning but it made me laugh when I saw it on my phone.   I was behind in laundry so I ran around mis-matched.  I didn't think anyone would care.  I sure didn't.

Editing, editing, editing

I've been editing the senior pictures I took on Sunday.  The consistency of my work flow depends entirely too much on coffee.  I get a lot done with a full cup in my hand.  My "Garden for Victory" cup is one of the biggest I own and I love it!!!

And I get very sad when my coffee runs out.  And I always think of my dad.  He used to always show me is empty cup of coffee and say "Isn't this sad?"  That was his code for fill 'em up.  I'm not sure if my brothers ever got my dad coffee, but I know I filled up lots of cups for him.  Maybe that's where I get my coffee addiction and dependency from.

On a totally random note... anyone notice the difference between the photos??

Back to editing, I go.

Long yet short

This day was long in that it was really busy and short because it was really busy.  I'm ready to turn off my mind and sleep.  Tomorrow looks to be just as busy because I have so much to follow-up on and reports to write.  I'm very much looking forward to my weekend.

I'm trying to prepare for my weekend.  My camera battery is charging.  That's a priority.  I still have to pack my stuff and get Brinkley's bag ready to go.  As usual, this place has turned into an absolute disaster and I have to dig myself out of piles before I can even think about cleaning.

I'm hoping to get to sleep here shortly so that I can wake up early for a 3 mile run.  My long run will be moved to Monday this week.  I think I'll try to redeem myself by repeating my five mile run from last week.

Ok, I'm off to accomplish a few more things before bed.  Night, all.

Fixed

I received my new lens in the mail on Wednesday.  I did a little happy dance when I came home to an Adorama box on my Welcome mat.  Packages are the best kind of mail to get!  I ordered a Nikon 50mm f1.8 on Monday morning after having a long discussion with myself through Sunday.  I have lots of discussions with myself these days.

This whole photography business thing has me excited.  More so than it ever has before.  I've thought about trying to make money at it previously.  But something always stopped me.  It was usually the business side of things that caused me to hesitate and move on to something more concrete and with a better chance of actually coming to fruition.

The more I think about things, the more I think that maybe it's all just about timing.  Maybe I easily blew off all those other thoughts and considerations because I had to be at a good place in life to be able to have a bit of freedom to take the risk.  I have a stable job with good benefits and a work week that allows me the free time to pursue photography.  It seems like this may be the time to strike if I'm ever going to know if it was meant to be or not.

So, with my nifty fifty lens, I'm going to dive head first into this thing.  I may have to give a little at first in order to make some headway but I'm looking at this as a long-term adventure and wherever it may lead is where it leads.

I guess this is my fair warning to you.  Expect to see a lot more on this blog regarding photography, photo adventures, photo shoots, and learning the ins and outs of running an actual business.  Have no fear though, there will still be plenty of other normal ramblings.

Tuesday Tidbits

  • I've had a success weekend with eating and working out.  I did five miles on Sunday, swimming yesterday, and a two mile run followed by one and a half mile walk with Brink this morning.  I've had lots of fruits and veggies over the weekend.  I've done my best to drink lots of water.
  • I don't know how many times I've mentioned my love for The West Wing on this blog.  It doesn't really matter because there is no such thing as too much love for The West Wing.  I've watched episode after episode while paying bills, making Brinkley food, reading blogs, and cleaning.  Every episode is magic, plain and simple.
  • I'm about half way through Heat Rises.  It makes me want TV seasons to start so I can watch new episodes of Castle.  I'm sure the Becket and Castle hook-up will only last a few episodes before there is trouble in paradise.  I'll take all the Caskett I can get.
  • The Olympics start on Friday!!  Yah!!  I love watching the Olympics.  It's nice to see so many sports that are individual sports featured.  My favorites to watch are the marathon, swimming, gymnastics, and diving.  I think I'll have a whole new respect for the swimmers this year.  Holy work, Batman!
  • I have early work stuff tomorrow morning so I'm headed to bed early.  I'm sure the work will fly right by.  I'm excited for what next weekend brings!!  I've got a senior picture photo shoot at Red Rocks!  I'm excited to get this show on the road.

Photo Adventure #2

I have many things to learn and lots of settings to tinker with on the camera.  I have to really stop and think about it because I can see the immediate result.  Back and forth, back and forth.  Framing and exposure will be much easier when I have some people to photograph.  I like that using a tripod makes me slow down and think about settings and best options rather than firing away.

Observations upon looking at myself.  Allen skin is kind of annoyingly orangish.  I'm not very fashionable.  Or photogenic.  Maybe that's why I like being behind the camera!!

I went to one of the many natural areas today.  I stayed within a few hundred yard radius and managed to find a variety of backdrops.  One more day of practice under the belt!

Is this thing working?

Huh?

Photo Location Scouting Trip

When I told my brother Monty about my plan to work officially starting my photo business, he got all excited.  If there is one thing my brother and I have in common is our tendency to dream big and think up wild and crazy ideas.

He suggested I keep a journal of sorts to track all of the good shooting locations that I find and the best times of day/year to visit.  So, if I figured if I'm out and about, I may as well take sample pics to show the general area and colors.  It also helps me get to know my camera better.  Although, it's very hard to compose an image and the exposure and focus correct while using a remote!!  I have quite a few images that are focusing on the wrong point or that cut a body part or two off.

So, today I went on a scouting trip just down the road to a local park.  The park is way bigger than I thought it was!!  Good mountain view, water, wildflowers, cool rocks, some benches, climbing trees, a bridge, some cool staircases, and other things I didn't explore because I was hungry and thirsty and threw in the towel.

It was fun.  And even though dozens of people probably thought I was the most vain person on the planet, I don't care.  Me acting like a geek is for the greater good!

Overexposed but a funny face on Heidi's request.

Damn you, Target!

I went to Target and Sprouts this afternoon for some basic shopping.  These two items were most definitely not on the list!  But they were cheap!  $4.75 for DVD.  I have it on VHS but I'm slowly trying to upgrade and widdle my VHS pile.  Harry Connick Jr. as a cowboy for under $5 - don't mind if I do.

And while I don't buy books since getting a Nook, I'll make the exception for the Castle series as I've already got the first two in paperback.  I'm excited to dive into this book later today!!!  I hate having to wait so long for the paperback version to be released.

In the end???  Forgot to buy new headphones - the main reason I was going to Target to start with.  Drat!!!!

I'm now working on the coffee in my Sears Willis Tower mug and watching The West Wing.

Long Run Sunday

This sums it all up...

Sweat was burning my left eye!!  Bit salty.

I started too late.  Spent the first three miles in the sun and was overheating rapidly.  I couldn't stop thinking about how hot and miserable it was.  I finally said the hell with it and started a run/walk through mile three.

I changed my route so I could get in some shade and walked through some shady areas in hopes of resetting myself.  Finding shade helped some but I was already taxed.  I jogged through the last mile to finish the five miles upright.

I stretched.  And guzzled water.  Then I sat in a cold bath to prevent inflammation and soreness.  It didn't really feel cold but it did feel good.  Brinkley doesn't understand cold baths.  He kept coming in to check on me.

He knows me too well.  I managed to dump some protein shake into the water while shaking it.  Rather than get out, I just sat there in a protein shake/cold water bath.  Oy, one of those mornings.

I'm glad it's done.  I'm going to do some cleaning and run a few errands later.  I have a lengthy list of things to work on this weekend.  At least the toughest part is out of the way!

Pancake Saturday

Saturdays are now pancake days.  I'm going to start moving into my half marathon training schedule routine, which means tomorrow morning I have a long run ahead of me.  And long runs also me I get to eat extra carbs on Saturday without guilt.  Lots of runners use pasta as a fuel.  I've used pancakes in the past and they seem to work pretty great for me.

So it was pancake night.  And I've down a Nalgene bottle full of water so I'm hydrated too!  I wasn't sure how long I was going to run tomorrow.  On the way home, 5 miles sounded like a good number and a good challenge.  I haven't hit 5 or 6 miles in a while and I better start making that a consistent weekly run.

If I were super tech savvy I would somehow screenshot my planned training schedule but I've decided old school is best.  I have printed calender sheets thru December and have penciled in 2 different training plans.  If I'm having a good week, I'll aim for the more challenging schedule.  If I'm having a busy/crummy week, I can hit the lighter schedule.

Weekly schedule looks like this...

Sunday - long run day, increasing from 5 miles to 14 miles

Monday - REST day!!  Or very light exercise day - walks with Brink or 10 minute jog

Tuesday - 2 mile run or cross-training like swimming or biking

Wednesday  - 30-45 minute run or 3-6 miles depending on how I'm feeling

Thursday - Cross-training

Friday - 30-45 minute run or 3-4 miles

Saturday - REST day!!!

On paper it looks doable and not so daunting as the Team in Training schedule I used for my first half marathon.  It was mostly based on time.  So the longest time on the schedule was 2 hours and 40 minutes.  And while 14 miles will likely take me that long, 14 miles seems more doable in my head than 2 hours and 40 minutes of running.

Anywho... so that's rolling around in my head.  As are a zillion thoughts about photography and how to get better and get paid.  I'll likely have a rambling post about that sometime this weekend.

For now, I leave you with this...

I saw this on Pinterest while I was browsing random things.  I instantly thought of Moxon and all of his guys.  This will be his room at some point.  All of his guys, lined up perfectly.  He's been lining things up since he was old enough to grab things.  Anywho, this photo gave me an awesome idea for a photo shoot with Moxon.  We shall see if I can make it happen!

Homemade Dog Food Update

Brinkley has been on a homemade dog food diet for about eight weeks.  I figured I would give an update on how it's been going because the dog food posts are some of the most viewed by visitors.

I've tried four or five different recipes to create the bulk of his food.  The easiest and cheapest recipe is chicken based.  Chicken seems to be cheaper per pound in my neck of the woods, which works out well for Brink because he loves his chicken.

Chicken Homemade Dog Food Recipe

4 large chicken breasts
2.5 cups white rice (about 5 cups cooked)
3 large crowns of broccoli
1 bag of baby carrots or the equivalent in green beans
1 can of pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling)

I cook the chicken in a crock pot all day long with about 1/2 cup water.  When I get home, I steam the rice.  And then I steam the veggies.  I mash the veggies once they are all steamed so that his system has a better chance of sucking out any nutrients from the veggies.  Once everything is cooked/steamed/mashed, I mix everything together with the can of pumpkin.

I separate his food into 2 cup servings.  Depending on how much the veggies mush down, the recipe makes about 20-24 cups, to make 10-12 servings, which translates to 5-6 days worth of food for Mr. Miles.  This recipe fills the biggest bowl that I own so I can't really double or triple it very easily without having to dirty every dish in the house.  If I find a commercial size tub for mixing or something similar, I will make bigger batches so I can stock the freezer too.

I've also made the same recipe with 3-5lbs of beef or turkey in place of the shredded chicken.  Two things I've noticed about the beef and turkey is that it makes it seem like he's getting mostly rice and I don't think it satisfies him for very long.  The shredded chicken seems to be Brink's favorite.

I've also used quinoa in place of rice and sweet potato in place of pumpkin or veggies.  I did make a batch of beef mixture with brown rice and that turned out to be a big flop because not only was it mostly rice but it turned out Brink's system doesn't break down and process brown rice.  Whole rice would come out the other end, which made for a very disgusting week of picking up dog poop.

Brinkley seems pretty content with his menu.  He's enjoyed snacks of string cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, and hard boiled eggs.  He has definitely lost some weight.  I don't have to press into his skin in order to feel his ribs.  He has a bit of an hour glass shape around the hips now.  According to charts like the one below, Brinkley looks normal to me.  I haven't weighed him recently but I bet he's lost 5-10lbs.

Source

Now that he's lost some weight, he gets consistent afternoon snacks, or mini-meals.  I'd say he's getting between 900-1100 calories a day.  He also gets his Glycoflex III tablet in the morning.  And he also gets a multi-vitamin with each 2 cup meal.  He gobbles them right up.

The effects of the homemade diet have been very noticeable to Brent and I.  Brinkley's consistent ear infection/brown smelly crud has become almost non-existent.  He had one small flair up during the first month and one recent flair up.  This usually happens as a result of too much regular kibble in his treat soccer ball or some other treat food.  These two flair-ups were only in one ear and were very minor compared to his constant nastiness that we fought endlessly when he was on a kibble diet.  He doesn't scratch his ears nearly as much as he used to and his ears don't smell any more!!

I know I mentioned the effects of the Gycloflex before but I think the real food diet has helped with his fluidity and energy level just as much as the Glycoflex.  Brent thinks Brink is more energetic and alert than he used to be.  He doesn't really favor his hind leg hardly at all and he's got a bit of pep in his step that wasn't there before.

If I remember to, I'll try to stop at the Vet's office this upcoming weekend to weigh Brink.  I want to ask about getting some blood work done to see if anything is out of whack with the new diet.  In all of the reading I've been doing, it seems to be mentioned frequently as a good idea to make sure the homemade diet is properly balanced and not negatively impacting something over the long term.

I also have a whole stack of recipes to try so Brink's diet can be a bit more diverse than the few variations I've come up with so far.  Even though it takes some work, I think the switch was well worth it.  I'll report on whatever the Vet has to say the next time we see her!

Leap of Faith

When I put forth the effort and take a leap of faith, I tend to do well at whatever I put my mind to.  This has always been the case with photography.  If I take the time to think ahead, read-up, experiment, and give it a shot, things work great more often than not.  And I get a thrill from seeing the final product.  And a thrill from reviewing and critiquing my own work.

But for all the good shots, there are twenty mediocre ones. I have a lot to learn.  I always will.  And I'm okay with that.  I did something I've been wanting to do for a while... I ordered some business cards.  Angeline Allen Photography is officially in the making.  Brent supports the idea and thinks it would be great if I could eventually leave the day job behind to do something a bit more fitting of my passions in life.

I mentioned I had a photo shoot with my friend Heidi's daughter, Tori.  Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.  It was definitely a fun day and I'm already looking forward to next time!

Homemade Pizza Night

Brent and I are getting the hang of this homemade pizza thing!! Tonight we had pepperoni, ham, onion, and green pepper pizza!!

And with the leftover dough we made a dessert pizza with cinnamon, sugar, and M&M topping. We also mixed up an almond sugar glaze to drizzle on top!!

Everything was DELICIOUS!! It's a good thing Brinkley and I got in our run this morning!!!

Sunday Swim

While the boys slept in yesterday morning, I headed off to the pool to try my hand at swimming again!  I spent about 40 minutes swimming back and forth, back and forth.  I worked on keeping my head down and rotating by body to breathe.  I can easily breathe from right to left every 3 strokes!  I could probably extend that some if I could slow my breathing out underwater.

I'm excited to try swimming in a longer length pool come fall and winter.  For now, I'll just keep taking advantage of the free pool in my complex.  If I go early in the morning I get it all to myself!!  And today I have a good amount of soreness in my triceps and core area!!  It feels good to make something other than my calves sore from a workout!!

Montana or Bust

What day is it?  Time?  Month?  Time is flying by so quickly I'm having a hard time keeping track of everything.

Brent and I took a mini-road trip last weekend.  I took one day off to make it an extended weekend.  Sunday afternoon we took off for Bozeman, Montana.  We made it to Timber Creek before we called it a night and pitched camp at the Spring Creek Campground about midnight.  The sprinklers kicking on around 7 startled us awake.  We reluctantly got up and on our way.

First stop was the Lumberjack Bar 'N Grill for breakfast.  It was recommended by our campground host so we figured we would take a chance on it.  It was pretty delicious.  I had a deep fried cinnamon roll and hashbrowns and Brent had some huge burrito smothered in green chili.  I highly recommend the cinnamon roll - it was delicious!!!

We then stopped at the Livingston Depot Museum where we learned random facts about the railroad, Livingston, and rail tourism to Yellowstone!  Good times.

After Livingston, we made it to our destination of Bozeman.  We enjoyed the obligatory Harley Davidson shop stop and picked up a double shot glass for the collection.  We then headed to downtown Bozeman to shop and eat.  Bozeman is a lot like downtown Ft. Collins shopping.  Lots of shops and restaurants.  We had a late lunch at the MacKenzie River Pizza Company, which was a great choice.  If you're ever in Bozeman, try the Hot Hawaiian pizza.  We were so hungry by late afternoon, we demolished the whole pizza.

Montana doesn't have any sales tax!  So I didn't feel guilty spending $20 on a shutter remote for my camera!!  Woohoo - a whole new world of possibilities folks.  Self portraits here I come!  Not really, but I am pretty excited about my remote!!  And it worked...

First remote shot... and view of the tent lawn at Bear Canyon Campground.

The second night we pitched our tent at the Bear Canyon Campground.  For $20, it was an okay setup.  Brent and I were pretty tired from our lack of sleep the night before so we just chilled out and hit the sleeping bags earlier, which payed off!

With almost ten hours of sleep, we headed south for a fun filled day in Yellowstone National Park!!  I was super excited to go to Yellowstone.  I'd never been to Yellowstone and the closest I ever got was a Road Closed sign back in January.  Brent went to Yellowstone back when he was really young and didn't really remember much about that visit so it was kind of a new experience for him too.

Just like every National Park - the "wild" animals cause traffic jams.
We entered through one of the popular entrances with the Roosevelt Arch.  There was a steady stream of traffic into the park but once people started getting distracted by the attractions, road traffic thinned out.

Roosevelt Arch

Now I can actually use my Yellowstone National Park scrapbook paper I bought years ago!!

We chose to stop at the Gibbons Falls which didn't have much of a traffic jam!  It was beautiful!  Hard to believe the walkway and parking lot was built so long ago.  Brent and I always find that stuff fascinating and try to determine how much it would cost today.  We're always in a agreement that it would cost more, take longer, and not be of the same quality if it were built today.

We then made tracks towards Old Faithful.  We ate lunch in one of the many National Park buildings.  Tons of shopping and lots of people!  It was quite chaotic.  We then wandered around some of the springs and hot spots while waiting for the next eruption of Old Faithful.  Right on schedule at 4:18 pm the geyser spewed it's 4,000-8,000 gallons of water!!  It was pretty cool to see!  We were on the eastern side (I think) and received I nice spritzing thanks to wind factor.

After Old Faithful we headed east around Yellowstone Lake towards Cody.  Yellowstone Lake was huge!!  And so pretty.

We had pretty good timing and got out of the park and into Cody as the sun was starting to set.  After a few days of camping, I was super excited to see our hotel!!  A soak in the in-room jacuzzi and hot shower was just what I needed to wipe the grime away.  And the king bed was perfect for sleeping-in!  It was 10:30 the next morning by the time we start stirring.

Brent took the long way home, as usual.  So we cut north through Shell Canyon from Greybull to Sheridan.  It's amazing how much the landscape can change in Wyoming.

From Sheridan we headed south to Casper to visit some of Brent's friends and then make the long trek back home to Fort Fun.  We got to see a grass fire outside of Casper.  And a double rainbow.  And then the sunset on the outskirts of a raging storm over Chugwater.  It was eerie driving into a complete red!!  The photo just doesn't do it justice!

And that's a wrap!  I took a ton of photos and will have lots of scrapbooking ahead of me!  I can't wait to go back to Yellowstone some day!!  There was so much more to explore and I want to see it all.
