Friday 5k

I ran my flat 5k loop this morning. I realized I was kind of shuffling through the motions around mile one. Something clicked.

I actually mentally engaged in what the heck I was doing. I focused on my form and tried to pick up the pace without feeling spent.

I averaged a 10:30 pace for about a mile and picked it all the way up to 9:45 ish for about 1/2 mile.

I was a sweaty mess when I got home but I was proud of myself for pushing harder. Maybe I would actually get faster if In consistently tried harder.

I avoided the coffee shop stop(s) today. This was a HUGE step towards the ladder to get me back up in the wagon. I've been horrible with the amount of lattés I've been drinking lately.

I was pretty tired when I got home thanks to little sleep last night. I did manage to make some onion and turkey meat for dinner.

Dinner was taco turkey, pinto beans, and tomatoes in mini lettuce wraps!! I was trying to avoid carbs, which I'd already had plenty of at lunch. It was delicious!! And I have leftovers for the next few days!

And now I'm in bed, crossing my fingers I get some decent sleep.

Good and Bad

Good: Flowers blooming in the backyard this morning.

Bad: Coming home mid-day to find Brinkley shut it the bathroom and evidence of his attempts to open the door himself.

Bolder Boulder 10k

I made my second run of the Bolder Boulder on Monday morning.  Bryn and I caught the bus about 6 and made it to the start area about an hour early.  Our wave wasn't set to start until 8:29 so we watched wave after wave accumulate and start.  It's pretty entertaining to watch such a HUGE race play out.  It's definitely the most well organized race I've ever run.

Just ignore the chubby legs.

Last year we ran in the military wave so we continued our tradition this year.  The Marines were on hand same as every year before.  Bryn and I have made it a goal now to keep pace with them through the first mile.  The passed within the first quarter mile and disappeared from site pretty quickly.  I think we would need to run about a ten minute pace to keep up with them.

It was a pretty great race.  It was super hot out and both of us feeling it pretty bad by mile two.  Around mile three we stopped to walk a bit, which helped quite a bit.  Bryn told me to run on without her so I took off up a decent sized hill towards the race's summit, 5350 ft - ish.  The second part of the race went by pretty quickly and I finished pretty good.  My last miles were under 12 minute miles.  Given the heat and hills, I'll take that.

Next year though... next year I'm keeping time with the Marines and I'm gunning for a 66 minute or less race!

Evening Walk

I tried to make up for Brinkley's gloom and doom morning by taking him for an evening walk.  Everything was nice and green after the half day of rain we had.

And this is the water that makes our home water front property! HA!

Gloomy Morning

Brent left this morning.  Brink and I watched the airport shuttle leave.

He was pretty sad.

He was even sadder when I left for work an hour later.  These Wednesdays are rough all the way around.  Poor pup.

Cat's Meow

I made a make shift perch for Milo.  It needs to be a little higher but for now he thinks it's the cat's meow.  Ha!

Saturday 5k

3.1 flat miles to start my day. That's twice this week that I was up with the sun for a run. I'm going to consider that a streak!!

Once I get going it's not to bad. It's those first few minutes of trying to wake up that are the worst. But I've slept better this week so I need to stick with it. Hotter weather is coming!

Prepped

Not sure how far I'll run but my clothes are laid out and waiting for a morning run.

Monday is the Bolder Boulder so I'll probably keep to a flat three miles.

Early bed time!

We're in bed early tonight. I'm drained. Hoping for a decent night's sleep so I can go running before work tomorrow.

Weekend. What weekend??

My weekend zoomed right by in a blur of overtime work shenanigans, making food, eating food, and errands.  I pretty much finished one of my work projects so I can come out from under the rock I've been living for a few days and get back to organizing and unpacking.

One of the highlights of my weekend was successfully making enchiladas.  I've never made them.  And they turned out great!  GREAT, I tell you!  And I had leftovers for lunch today and they were just as delicious the second day too!

One of the many errands was a trip to Sam's Club.  My mom will tell you the last thing we needed to purchase was food.  But we did purchase a tub of cookie dough, from which I made cookies last night after dinner.  Maybe someday I'll make my own stock of refrigerator/freezer cookie dough.

I've come to the realization I need more shelves for my office.  I've filled my two bookshelves and still have scrapbooks on the floor and snow globes in the spare bathroom linen closet.  I need a good filing cabinet too.  But I'm going to hold off until I do a full room makeover with matching shelves, desk, work table, etc.  I'll make do with what I have for now.

Off to toil in my piles!!

Monday Run

Roughly 3 miles. My Garmin wasn't charged so Ill have to find out another time.

The hill is a butt kicker but I ran the ran the whole thing. This will be one of the hills I will use for repeats. I think there another one I could use along the trail.

I'm hoping all the stairs and rolling hills on my routes make me stronger and faster. My legs sure have felt whooped lately!!

New Territory

My new two mile route includes the following ...

I'm a happy camper.

As is Milo...

He's settling in quite nicely. He's even ventured downstairs once or twice.

The West Wing

This is why Milo and I have a weird loner kind of bond. He doesn't mind watching The West Wing with me in near darkness.

Verbal Vomit

It's been crazy busy lately.  All great stuff so I'll certainly have to play catch-up...hopefully.

My race last Sunday was awesome!  I'm happy to have another half marathon under my belt.  The soreness was nothing compared to past races so I must have done something right this time.  It was awesome to run a bigger race in my own backyard and have my mom along the course.  I was amazed at how quickly 13 miles passed!

I got a lot more stuff moved to the new house and started arranging my office/craft room.  Tomorrow is full blown moving day!!  It's time to get the animals and furniture over there!  Cross your fingers that Milo likes his new digs.

I've been doing my darndest to reach my Fitbit goals each day.  There have been a few days that I've had to pace around the house to reach my 10,000 steps a day.  I'm surprised by how sedentary I am during the day considering I'm traveling all over town.  It sure feels like I'm moving all the time!

This upcoming week is going to make me sad.  It's season finale week!  Noooooooooo.  I'm not ready.  Why don't shows run year round??

One Year Ago

The non-Disney life just does not compare to Disney life.  At all.  Words cannot describe how badly I miss Disney World.

My first day with the Fitbit Flex

I lucked out yesterday by finding out that Best Buy had my much anticipated Fitbit Flex in stock.  I called while on lunch break and had them put one on hold for me.  I raced over there after work to pick it up.  I let it charged and synced it with my mobile app and MyFitnessPal, the app I use to track my food...sometimes.  Before I went to bed, I put the Flex in sleep mode.

FINALLY!!

I woke up to the gentle vibration of the Fitbit Flex at 6:00 a.m.  I was surprised that it actually woke me up.  I tapped it twice to exit sleep mode and quickly fell back asleep.  Oops.  When I woke up at 7 and started moving, the Flex started it’s tracking.  Before I left for work I checked my Fitbit dashboard, I slept 7 hours and 34 minutes last night, waking up nine times.  Fitbit considers that 97% sleeping efficiency.  Not sure exactly what that means but I'd consider a pretty good sleep.  I felt rested!

Anywho, I was surprised by how many steps I had accumulated just by walking around my small condo and making my way to my patrol car.  I kept a close watch on the app and the step count matched me step for step.
One of the things that I was most interested in was whether or not the Flex would count steps while I drove.  I’d read various reviews that said the Fitbit One did this and users had to enter their time driving in the app to counteract any unearned steps.  This was a HUGE worry of mine.  I spend a majority of my 10 hour shift driving from call to call so I was anxious to see how the Flex reacted.
(Insert gigantic smiley face here)  The Fitbit Flex did not track a single step while I was in the car.  Not one.  All day long.  I would check my step count prior from leaving point A.  When I got to point B, it had not changed.
As for step accuracy, I checked frequently to see if my level of activity was matching my step count.  When I look at the chart of steps, I can tell exactly what I was doing with each spike through the day.

Based on spikes and no movement, my day looked like this… wake-up and get ready for work, short commute to PD, shift briefing, commute to crime scene and crime scene processing with dips in movement while collecting certain pieces of evidence, commute to PD around 12:45, logging evidence, commute to a vehicle accident, working accident until 4:30, commute to home for lunch, walking around and taking dog outside, commuting to a traffic complaint, working traffic complaint, and commuting back to PD, dropping off paperwork, commuting home.  The big spike at the end is getting home and taking the dog for a mile and half walk.
This is a great representation of my day and the amount of activity, or lack thereof.  I hit my 10,000 steps just outside my door after walking my dog.
I did sync my Flex with MyFitnessPal and it sent an additional 340-ish activity calories to my daily allotment.  This is key.  My BMR is 1900 calories.  That’s 1900 calories to maintain my weight.  I don’t want that. Like everyone else, I’m trying to lose weight.  So, I set my calorie burn goal on Fitbit to 2400 calories and my food diary goal in MFP to 1400 calories.  That’s 1,000 calorie deficit (2lbs/week) each day ONLY if I hit my 2400 calories burned goal and my 1400 MFP goal.  Remember, 1900 is my base metabolic rate, so anything beyond base that Fitbit credits me for, I’m eating back.  Today for instance, I’m up to 1740 calories allotted to eat.  And that sounds much more reasonable than 1400 or even 900 if you cut it that far.
I digress.  My first day with the Fitbit Flex has been everything I hoped it would be.  It has been eye-opening and motivating.  I don’t always process extensive crime scenes like I did today.  Because of that, I got extra steps that normally would not have.  My count would have been much lower on a normal day.  And without the walk, my average count would be in the ballpark of 5,000.  EYE-OPENING!
I made it!

I wanted to reach that 10,000 step goal so instead of plopping on the couch and being content that it was a true Friday for me, I leashed up the dog and took him for a walk.  I would NOT have done that if this slate wristband with magical tracker had not been on my wrist.
I’ve been grumbling for far too long about being able to run for two hours at a pop and not lose a pound.  It’s the forest, not the tree the matters.  And even from day one, I can tell the Fitbit Flex is going to paint a better picture of my forest.  In the next few weeks I will probably have a lot of revelations about just how inactive my life really is even though I can run 5ks on a whim and be a back of the pack half marathoner.
I’m ready to give this activity and calorie tracking a whole-hearted effort.  Clearly, what I’ve been doing is not working!
And one more note about the Flex - I used the silent alarm function at various hours throughout the day.  I set them using my app.  The Flex would vibrate with the intent to remind me to drink more water.  Every time, even in the middle of carrying equipment through a slushy, muddy mess requiring concentration, I felt the Flex’s gentle reminder to be conscious of what I’m doing to my body!  I love that!
Keep in mind, the alarm will repeat twice more every nine minutes unless recognized with a double tap.  The Fitbit manual says this is one way to help extend the battery charge!!
Ok, well, that’s all I have for now!!  I hope others who picked up the Flex have enjoyed their first day as much I have.  Any questions??  Fire away.

Evening Walk

Goodbye, Winter!

Mid-week Winter looked like it wasn't going anywhere...

But the sun eventually came back out again.  And our front tree is budding!  I've said it before and I'll say it again... bring on Spring!!

Final race instructions

I received my "final race instructions" via e-mail this morning.  I'm calculating that I have to be up at 4.am. to get to the bus on time.  I don't think I'll be wearing shorts at the start.  Weather outlook has changed from 70s to 50s with it being in the 30s for most of the early morning hours.  Awesome.

So now the questions begin... do I wear shorts underneath light pants and a short sleeve shirt over a longer one?  If so, which layer should I stick my bib on?

I know there will be a bag drop at the start so I'll be able to stay somewhat warm before the race starts.  I can strip off a layer before it starts but I'm definitely too much of a cold weather weenie to run in shorts in the mid-30s.  What to do, what to do?

I'm crossing my fingers that the weather turns from a spring snowstorm to sunny super quick.  Maybe by Friday the weather will turn back to the 40s or higher.  A girl can hope, right?
