In the wee hours of the morning, Marshal and I donned our camo and headed for the hills. After only a short drive we reached the trailhead. By headlamp light, we marched down the trail and raced the rising sun to reach the turkeys we left roosting in the trees last night.
A quarter mile or so from our destination, we flipped off our lamps and entered stealth mode to get the sneak on the sleeping birds. With only a few hundred yards to go, Marshal spotted the turkeys. But to our surprise they weren't where we left them!!
The whole flock of turkeys was already out of the tree tops and in the field we were aiming to reach. We stopped and reassessed. Well, Marshal reassessed. I drank some water and tried to fill my lungs with air again.
Marshal set up some decoys and talked back and forth with the flock as it made its way up the hill opposite of us. They made tracks so Marshal and I started climbing up the back side of the mountain to see if we could meet up with them.
I took the photo above shortly after crossing that little creek pictured and before trucking up the pretty steep hill side to my back. We heard some clucking hens but they weren't interested in coming our way.
We hiked back out and battled the ticks, which are thick! They seem to like Marshal more than me today. Last night I got a few out of my hair. Eww!! I've had the heebie-jeebies ever since!
We've been lazy since we got back. We're headed out again this evening. I certainly am getting my exercise. I may not be able to move in the morning!
